Christian Activity Center
The purpose of the Christian Activity Center is to embrace childhood and secure futures for the children of East St. Louis.
We support the center with donations of money, supplies and member mentoring. This year we donated $ 1000 to the center. Four of our members go to the center once a month during the school year, to be with the kids and help with homework of just be a friend and listen. Our members have donated such items as ping-pong and foosball tables. We also donated school supplies and more than 500 new books to the center.
Statistics:
500 unduplicated children per week attend the center (4000 per year)
65-85 children attend homework room each day
Lowest income in St. Clair County at Gompers Housing Project (61% of residents live below 200% of federal poverty level)
100% of donations go to the children
Salaries are paid through grants
Success Stories
In 1989, 50% of neighborhood youth were gang affiliated. 50% failed to completed High School. 13% of teen girls presented with pregnancy
Today, fewer that 5% are gang affiliated. Juvenile crime has dropped 80% in the neighborhood. 90% of youth graduate High School.
